Golden Gate Chapter Meeting
| SPEAKER: | Will Travis, Joint Policy Committee
|
| TOPIC: | Prosperity in the Face of Climate Change: An Impossible Dream? |
| DESCRIPTION: | California is at the forefront of state efforts to combat climate change through legislation such as SB 375, aimed at encouraging sustainable development to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, much of which will take place within the historic urbanized core surrounding the Bay. But sea level rise resulting from global warming is predicted to cause water levels in San Francisco Bay to rise an additional 1.4 meters or more by the end of this century, endangering over 330 square miles of low-lying shoreline property and over $60 billion worth of public and private development.
Therefore, at the same time the region is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it needs to begin adapting to sea level rise and other impacts of climate change.
The challenge of integrating shorter term efforts to increase regional employment creation with longer term strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change is being overseen by the Bay Area Joint Policy Committee, made up of four regional planning agencies for the Bay Area. To some, the idea advancing economic prosperity in the face of climate change might seem to be an impossible dream. Will Travis, the Senior Advisor, to the Joint Policy Committee, will explain why meeting this challenge is essential and the steps that are being taken to achieve success.
